Study Finds Link Between Asthma, Obesity and AC Use
Increases in asthma and obesity in the U.S. correlate with the nation's increased use of central heating and air conditioning, according to a recent study. The study by the National Center for Healthy Housing analyzed relationships between health status and housing quality over a 30-year period. The researchers postulated that increased thermal comfort inside air-conditioned homes can encourage residents to remain indoors. Sedentary habits can lead to obesity, and spending many hours in a poorly ventilated home can increase the chances of developing asthma.   read more...
AHRI Opposes Current House Energy Bill
The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) has announced its opposition to the current version of H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) Act of 2009. AHRI says the bill, if passed, would remove federal preemption provisions of existing energy-related laws. "In its current form, the ACES Act would effectively allow any jurisdiction in the nation to enact its own energy policy through the use of prescriptive building codes, severely impacting the ability of heating, air-conditioning, and commercial refrigeration manufacturers to provide products to residential and commercial customers in the most timely, efficient, and economical way," said AHRI President Stephen Yurek.   read more...
Swine Flu - Infection Control Overview
The Swine Flu has certainly grabbed our attention over the last few weeks. The Swine Flu, specifically Swine influenza A (H1N1), is a respiratory disease of pigs. Historically swine flu has not typically infected humans and those few who were infected had been exposed directly to an infected pig. In recent days, however the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that the Swine influenza virus is contagious and is spreading from human-to-human. Like all types of influenza, the Swine Flu is a virus that is spread from human-to-human through two main methods - airborne and surface contact   read more...

Indoor Air Quality Tip

IAQ TIP - Pandemic Preparation
Should you prepare, and if so how? Should you prepare for a Pandemic outbreak? There are a lot of factors that play into this decision - for example if you are in anyway related to healthcare, educational, travel or correctional facilities the answer is an obvious yes. For the rest of us it can be more difficult to determine if we should prepare and to what level. If a pandemic were to strike - I am not trying to spread fear by asking the question but trying to raise awareness. What would the possible impact be on your building occupants - your workforce and/or the general public? The possible economic impact of a pandemic flu sweeping through a workforce could be staggering. That said I believe all facilities should prepare to some level or another for the possibility of an outbreak. Lots of steps can be taken and one good resource is http://www.pandemicflu.gov. Some basic precautions we can all take is to warn occupants to cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and to frequently wash their hands. These are very inexpensive precautions and target the main methods of transmission. If the risk of a pandemic event is greater or there is a large economic impact for such an outbreak you should consider more aggressive prevention methods - including looking at upgrading your filtration to target transmission via droplet nuclei. Contact your local representative for more assistance in developing your strategy to prepare for a possible pandemic.
